    ring sizing

Thinking about proposing to your special someone? Well, they won’t be too happy when their ring goes flying down the aisle.

A ring is a beautiful, timeless gift to express love for a person – after all, the circular shape symbolizes eternity. That’s why ring sizing is so important, to ensure it is the perfect fit (and no, this isn’t just as simple as looking at your partner’s hands.)

So, you may be wondering, how do I go about sizing a finger for a ring?

We at Finer Custom Jewelry are here to fill you in on the best, most simple ring sizing guide, along with other valuable tips for your jewelry shopping. Keep reading to learn more.

    What is Your Ring Size?

Let’s start by going over what your ring size actually is. To put it simply, your ring size is basically the circumference/diameter of the inside of your ring. This is the part that goes around your finger.

In the United States, we measure rings using a numerical scale and most often using millimeters. This varies in other countries, which may use other sizing charts and forms of measurement.

    Why is Ring Sizing Necessary?

So, why is sizing your ring necessary? Well, without the proper ring size, your ring will likely be either too tight or too loose unless by chance, you happen to get lucky and instantly buy the perfect fit, which doesn’t often happen.

A ring that is too loose will slip off your finger, and you are likely to lose it. A ring that is too tight will be extremely uncomfortable and may not even fit on your finger, to begin with (plus, a ring that is squeezed onto your finger isn’t the most attractive look).

Let’s face it, rings are not only a special gift, but they are also on the pricy side. Therefore, you’ll want to go above and beyond to do everything right and get a ring that is not too tight, not too loose, but just right.

    Ring Sizing Chart

You may be wondering, what are the sizes in a basic ring sizing chart? These numbers are different between men and women, as men generally have larger fingers than women. However, both use numbers and half numbers as a form of measurement.

Women’s rings start at 3 mm, being the smallest, and 9 mm, being the largest. Men’s rings start at 8 mm, being the smallest, and 14 mm being the largest.

The average ring size for a man is size 8.5, while the average ring size for a woman is size 6. Though, it’s important not to rely on these statistics as they can vary from person to person.

If you are caught somewhere in between, experts agree that it is best to size up rather than down.

How to Measure Your Ring Size

We’ve talked about what a ring size is and why it is a necessary part of buying a ring. Now, let’s delve into how to measure your ring size.

Before we go over these different strategies, if you are gifting a ring to a person, it may be in your best interest to first ask your significant other’s friends or family members what their ring size is.

This could save you from the work that goes into finding their ring size. Although you may not want to 100%, rely on it as their ring size may have changed down the line. Either way, it doesn’t hurt to ask.

Also, be sure that your fingers are relatively warm before measuring your ring size. Why? Because our fingers actually shrink when the weather is cooler out. Strange right? Other variables that can affect the size of your finger depending on the time of day or how much salt you have consumed in the days leading up to the measurement.

Another thing to take note of is the size of your knuckles. If they are big, it is advisable to order a half a size bigger.

Now, let’s get into the different ways you can measure your ring size.

    Buy a Ring Sizer

Buying a ring sizer is one of the most accurate and straightforward ways to find your ring size. These are very inexpensive and can be ordered online.

You may be surprised to learn that there are two different types of ring sizers. The first option you can choose to buy is a keyring. This plastic or metal device consists of various different ring sizes for you to try on. Simply place your finger in the different-sized holes till you find your perfect fit.

You can also choose to buy a finger-measuring tool. This is basically a mini, adjustable measuring tape that wraps around your finger and determines your final ring size.

Which one is better? Most agree that the key ring will deliver more accurate results as there is no room to really mess up on sizing. The finger-measuring tool, while also reliable, may leave more room for error if measured incorrectly.

    Measure a Previously-Owned Ring

Another easy way to find out a ring size is to measure a ring that you already own. All you will need to do is to take a ruler and measure the inside diameter of the ring, going straight across the sides of the ring.

Using a conversion chart, you will be able to convert your measurement and find your size!

Another simple way to do this is to print out a ring sizing chart and match the ring up to the different sizes provided.

You could also choose to bring a ring that fits well into the jeweler and request one of the exact same size. Although, if you go down this route, be sure that the ring truly fits you and has not been sitting at the bottom of your jewelry box for months on end.

Use a String and a Ruler

If you’re going for a unique, DIY approach, the string, paper, and ruler technique is another tactic you can use to find your ring size. Although bear in mind, this strategy is a bit tedious.

You will first need to gather your materials which include a piece of string, thread, floss, or a strip of paper that is cut 3/4-inches wide and 4 inches long.

You will start by wrapping the string or strip of paper around the base of your finger. Once it overlaps, you will take a pen or a marker to leave a mark on that area. This will be your circumference.

After this, you will measure the string or paper with your ruler and divide it by 3.14, which will give you your diameter. Then you will choose the ring size based on the standard ring chart.

This is definitely not the most accurate way to find your ring size. For instance, if you pull the string too snugly, you could accidentally measure a larger size than your finger actually is.

Likewise, if your coordination is off while measuring this way, your size might be wrong altogether.

That being said, it’s a great method to do in a pinch if you’re looking for a DIY method to find your ring size.

    Use a Printable/Virtual Ring Sizer

Now with the internet, we have practically everything at our fingertips (no pun intended). Yep, this includes ring sizers.

A great and easy method to measure your ring size is to print a ring sizer off the internet. Then, you will take your ring of choice and match it up to the different sizes. Whichever one it fits in is the match!

While this is a popular method to find your ring size, you risk the measurements being slightly off depending on the printing size you have used.

You might be wondering, what do I do if my ring is caught between two different sizes? In this case, you would choose the larger size.

    Can I Resize My Ring?

So, you’ve bought a ring without finding the size prior. Or maybe you’ve received a ring as a gift, but it’s too tight or too loose. Can this be fixed?

In most cases, you’re in luck. A ring can be resized about two sizes up or down at most local or custom jewelers. This process can take less than an hour if the ring has a basic design, though you will often have to wait a couple of weeks as jewelers are usually filled with other orders to take care of.

During this time, if you have a ring that’s too loose, the jeweler may provide you with a temporary ring guard to get you by. If you are upsizing the ring, the process will also be shorter as that is the easier of the two processes.

When deciding to resize a ring, it’s always in your best interest to visit the same jeweler where the ring was purchased at. That’s because the jewelers will be familiar with the type and style of the ring.

If you are increasing the size of your ring, the jeweler will shave some material off the sides of the ring. This will make the sides thinner and looser for the person wearing it.

If you are decreasing the size of your ring, the jeweler will cut metal out from the middle of the band and reshape the circle so it will fit more snugly.

    How Much Does Resizing Cost?

As for the cost, resizing a ring ranges from as cheap as 20 dollars to 150 dollars. For example, the fancier and more complex design of the ring, the more likely it is to be on the higher end.

A good tip? If you aren’t sure of someone’s exact ring size and are thinking about buying them a ring, size up instead of down.

Also, confirm ahead of time that the ring you buy is eligible to be resized, as some are not able to, and that would put you in a pretty hopeless situation. Usually, rings made of titanium and stainless steel are not able to be resized.

Worst-case scenario, you may be eligible for a refund if your ring cannot be resized.

You’ve found out your significant other’s ring size, and you’re now ready to shop for the engagement ring of your future fiance. Here are a few tips you’ll want to keep in mind.

Be sure to take the shape of the ring into account and the type of metal the receiver of the ring prefers. This could include rose gold, yellow gold, silver, platinum, etc.

Also, be sure to set your budget going in, as rings are a huge financial decision. If a ring you adore seems to be out of reach, you should always try negotiating.

Finally, you should always make sure that the jeweler you buy the ring from is certified and that the certificate matches the diamond. If not, you may not be getting your money’s worth.

The Ultimate Guide to Styling Platinum Jewelry

    platinum jewelry

Platinum jewelry is a timeless gift, and it’s an investment that will last a lifetime. At the same time, platinum can be a little intimidating to wear at first. It takes some time to learn how to style new jewelry, but once you get the hang of it, there are endless possibilities.

To help you make the right choices for your budget and style, keep reading for the ultimate guide to styling platinum jewelry options.

Pair Jewelry That You Feel Beautiful Wearing

There is no one right way to wear platinum jewelry. It’s all up to you! You can choose anything from a minimal diamond-cut chain to more complicated cocktail rings.

The key to styling platinum pieces is to pair them with the jewelry you already love.

Look for an earring that matches a necklace in your jewelry box. Or maybe there’s a bracelet that goes perfectly with a new pair of studs. Once you’ve found some options, try them on together and decide what looks best.

Remember, platinum is an investment in your appearance and personality. As such, there are no better style options than the one that makes you feel most confident.

Use a Platinum Necklace to Take Your Look From Day to Night

A platinum necklace can take your look from day to night in an instant. And it’s the perfect way to add some sparkle and shine to an otherwise casual outfit.

You can wear a platinum necklace with a plain white T-shirt and jeans, or dress it up with a black suit and crisp white shirt. Either way, the piece will elevate your style like no other.

Platinum necklaces are so versatile that you can wear them with any color of clothing. Pair them with everything from blue jeans to black dresses, and anything in between! Simply choose one that matches your outfit best (or go for contrast) and you’re set!

Stay Minimal With Clean Lines and a Timeless Design

Whether you’re looking for a little luster or something to accent your outfit, platinum bracelets are a great way to add that missing shimmer.

Bracelets with simple, elegant designs and no extra frills are the best type of bracelets for your money. You can wear a modest bracelet with almost anything. And, best of all, these types of pieces tend to hold their value well over time.

Bring Your Look Together With a Pair of Hoops

Although platinum jewelry has been known for its minimalism, sometimes you just want to take your look up a notch. A pair of hoop earrings is a great way to do just that!

You can wear them as a statement piece, or as an accent. They’re the perfect addition to any ensemble.

If you can find a pair of platinum hoops to go with your elegant rope chain, it will complete the look. Platinum is light as a feather so it’ll be easy on your ears. This makes it especially comfortable to wear in piercings that you want to protect from unnecessary pressure as they heal.

However, if you can’t find a pair of platinum hoops, sterling silver makes a great alternative!

    Add a Brooch

You can add a brooch to almost any outfit, and it will still look stylish. Brooches complement platinum cable chains and flat bands well because they’re simple accessories that won’t clash with your other jewelry.

If you’re not sure where to start when it comes to buying a brooch, look for one that has a simple design and features the same color as your chain. For example, if you have a platinum cable chain, consider getting a silver brooch.

Even if you choose brooches that feature diamonds or other precious stones, the sparkle won’t overshadow your platinum jewelry.

Get a Manicure to Match Your Platinum Rings

While the color of your nails may not be one of the first things that come to mind when you think about accessorizing an outfit, it can have a big impact on how polished and put-together you look.

A matching nail color can enhance the appearance of your platinum jewelry by drawing attention to it. You’ll be able to see all the details in your rings and bracelets without having to peer closely at each piece individually.

Cool neutrals like gray or navy blue make platinum jewelry pop. You can also achieve the same effect with warm earth tones like gold and rose. Opt for a bolder color if you have some pieces with diamonds or other stones in them.

    All Black Clothing

Black is a classic color, and it’s an ultimate wardrobe staple for good reason. Black goes with anything and everything, making it the perfect choice for a platinum chain.

Platinum jewelry really stands out when paired with black. It’s easy to see why many celebrities opt for this color combination. It’s a classic look that will never go out of style.

If you’re looking for something a little more daring, try pairing your platinum chain with your favorite pendant. This will make the chain stand out even more, and it’s a great way to show off your unique sense of style.

Classic Diamond Studs With a Platinum Necklace

Classic diamond studs are a staple in any woman’s jewelry box. Pairing them with a platinum necklace is one of the easiest ways to upgrade your look.

Start by choosing a high-quality pair of studs that you love and feel comfortable wearing every day. Then, find a platinum chain that’s the right length for you. It should be long enough to hang at least halfway down your chest and not feel too heavy when you wear it around your neck.

Finish the look with a sleek bracelet and your favorite lipstick. The result is an appearance that’s classy, feminine, and beautiful.

    Statement Rings

If you’re looking to add some flair to your platinum ring set, a statement ring will be a flawless addition. A statement ring can complement a minimalistic look by adding just enough sparkle without being overwhelming.

You can take your look from simple to dramatic in just a few steps. Begin with a ring that has an interesting color, like a rose gold or silver band with a colored stone on top. Next, pair it with another piece of platinum jewelry that is more understated.

For example, wear your statement ring on your right hand and keep the other one simple with an equally sized flat-edged band. That way, your outfit will be uniform and your jewelry will shine, but not too much.

    Diamond Bracelets

A diamond bracelet is one of the most classic types of jewelry for women. It will always complement any look you choose, especially platinum jewelry. These two elements are a match made in heaven, so you can wear them together with no problem.

The only time you may have to be careful is when you’re wearing a statement piece of jewelry, like a large cocktail ring or an oversized hairpiece. A diamond bracelet can make your outfit look too busy if it’s not paired with the right details.

If this is the case, try switching out one of your other pieces for something more simple, like a half-round band. This simple change will ensure that your accessories don’t compete with each other.

    Stacked Rings

If you’re going for a look that says I’m ready to conquer the world, stacked rings are for you. Wear multiple platinum rings at once to make a bold statement about your fierce style.

When wearing stacked rings on opposite hands, it’s important to keep them balanced so that one side doesn’t look heavier than the other. You can stack unique rings together if you want to mix things up; just be sure that there’s an equal number of rings on each hand.

If you’re stacking rings on the same hand, keep them evenly spaced out so that they don’t look overloaded.

    Add a Pop of Color

Black isn’t the only show-stopping shade to pair your platinum jewelry with. Emerald green tops or sunshine yellow trousers can create a statement that’s just as bold.

If you’re looking for something unusual, try wearing your platinum jewelry with rainbow-hued items. The vibrant colors will complement each other nicely and give your look a little something extra.

Use Your Platinum Jewelry to Create Contrast

If you’re wearing your platinum jewelry with a simple outfit, try to create some contrast. Try pairing it with dark-colored items like black or navy blue earrings. And if you’re wearing something colorful, like a floral print, go for neutral pieces like white gold and diamonds.

This will help your platinum jewelry stand out while still creating a cohesive look.

Make the Most of Your Jewelry Collection

Platinum jewelry is a great way to add some sophistication and elegance to any look. But it’s even better when you can mix and match your pieces to highlight your unique style. If you’re looking for platinum accessories that will help you express your personality, check out our selection of platinum jewelry.

  • Geri Horner Talks Grazia Through Her Unique Style And Her Ultimate Fashion Icon

On Friday morning, my phone rang and my heart skipped a beat. I knew who was on the other end of the line. Geri Horner, nee Halliwell, was ringing me to talk about the latest episode of her YouTube series, Rainbow Woman.

    Geri

It was, for me, a momentous occasion. As a child, the Spice Girls were goddesses. I worshipped their every move. My bedroom was lined floor-to-ceiling with posters. I had the lunchbox, the dolls, the stationery. My tenth birthday party was a Spice Girls party with Spice Girls cake and Spice Girls goodie bags. In Year 4, I was given detention for making and selling my own Spice Girls merchandise. When Blue Peter ran a poetry competition, asking viewers to submit verses focused on a significant moment in history, they received yards of entries about wars, scientific discoveries and moon landings. I wrote about the most significant moment in my personal history: when Geri left the Spice Girls in 1998. I managed to recover emotionally in time for this interview, 23 years later.

Rainbow Woman, which launched last year with an exploration of the life of Elizabeth I, continues its run with a new episode – The Right Fit – dedicated to Audrey Hepburn. A firm favourite of Geri’s in the style stakes, she endeavours to make a dress modelled on the Breakfast At Tiffany’s star.

‘Audrey has always been my go to,’ she says. ‘I love the old black and white movies, and her classics like Roman Holiday and Sabrina. If in doubt, go black: it’s so simple and so timeless. When I left the Spice Girls, almost when I was in my cocoon phase, I’d always go for the black Polo neck. There was lots of black and grey. And I love pearls: I’ve worn peals forever. I have this saying: “Even Watford Girls Wear Pearls.” And why not? You can put your pearls on with jeans and trainers and feel good. Why not? Mix it up.’

This latest episode of the series is far from Geri’s first time threading a needle. She has long made her own clothes, or re-fashioned and re-purposed vintage pieces, ever since studying textiles at school.

‘I went to a Girl’s Grammar School and obviously there was a school uniform, but I remember sneaking in stripey socks, trying a little bit of self-expression’, she recalls. Getting to grips with this as a girl served her well in the male-dominated music industry at a time when manufactured groups were the norm.

‘The lioness that I am, I feel happiest when I can be myself’, she chuckles. ‘And it’s really inspiring when I see others being themselves. We can all be individuals, but united. Look at Mother Nature: there’s a garden of many flowers out there.’

The Union Jack dress alone would be enough to earn Geri a place in the fashion hall of fame, but in the last three decades she has shown herself to be one of pop culture’s most fascinating sartorial chameleons. The Spice Girls’ peak saw her don platforms, short skirts, hot pants and unitards. Of the five young women, Geri’s style was without doubt the most bright, daring and engaging. When she left the group and went through a period of reflection, as well as launching a philanthropic career, a more classic, serious style became the norm. Her solo career seemed to merge the two. The Schizophonic era was defined by sexy but not immodest looks. The Scream If You Want To Go Faster campaign seemed to go for grown-up-cheeky. And now, as Geri has become a mother, wife, author, TV judge, Celebrity Great British Bake Off contestant and YouTube creator – Rainbow Woman indeed – she has evolved once more, her looks defined by clean crisp tones and practical cuts. In short, she is without doubt a style icon.

‘I find that really flattering’, she says earnestly. ‘That’s really nice. I think we all come into our own in different stages of our life. If could tell my younger sisters and brothers out there, I would say that actually your style is yours: be with it and let it grow with you. Sometimes we find it fits better at different stages of our lives. The Audrey look is true to me. You can get swept up in fashion, that’s fine: it’s playful and good. But the fundamental essence of ourselves – our style – never goes out of fashion. People say I wear cream or white a lot, but I find it so simple. And it means that when I put colour on, it feels like a celebration. The decisions I make – generally but not always – are very reflective and instinctive of where I’m at. It’s organic.’

Geri is an active interviewee. As we speak, she browses the internet, screengrabbing images of her outfits as she discusses them so that she can pass them on to me later. Her legacy – as a Spice Girl, as an object of fan affection, as a woman in the public eye – is clearly important to her. She seems genuinely pleased to know that she is speaking to someone who spent their childhood idolising her.

‘I feel like we’ve gone full circle!’ she says, as if we’re firm friends. ‘Twenty years ago, with Blue Peter, and here we are!’

I really must dig out that poem.
