Reba McEntire has been through a bonafide style evolution as a country music icon throughout her decades of fame. She went from wearing gifted dresses on repeat in the early ’80s to rocking the 2022 Oscars red carpet in a custom-designed Dolce & Gabbana gown. But she still stays true to her roots with her style choices by showing off her “rodeo cowgirl side.”
Reba McEntire’s upbringing prepared her to be a style icon
McEntire grew up on “a working cattle ranch in southeastern Oklahoma, a little bitty town called Chockie …” she shared with Garden & Gun. For fun, she was a rodeo barrel racer, though she once thought that would be her career. And the things she learned in those experiences have stayed with her, even after more than four decades of fame.
“Learning to work on a ranch really came over into my career, because when you were told to do something, you did it — no back talk — you just did it, unless you had a question, of course, about how to do it,” she explained. She learned “work ethic, taking direction, that paid off whether … doing television, Broadway, or on concerts.”
But the lessons about hard work and responsibility weren’t the only aspect of her family’s lifestyle she carried into adulthood. She also took some notes on fashion that she still uses to this day.
Reba McEntire really likes to portray her ‘rodeo cowgirl side’ with her style
When asked by Garden & Gun about her favorite looks through the years, McEntire said, “One thing I really like to wear are leather jackets, with my cowboy boots and my buckle to portray that rodeo cowgirl side of me.”
Of course, McEntire is also a fan of glittering ball gowns. But according to her, “tough-sexy” is her favorite look to serve.
“Sandi Spika, back in the nineties, designed some great lightweight jumpsuits that I could wear my belt and boots with, with a lot of fringe. I loved those, and I love boots that are danceable,” McEntire shared. “My Western, cowgirl, tough-sexy look is what I like!”
