    Best Skincare Routine for Men

When you think of men’s skincare, what do you remember seeing if you think back to your dad’s (or grandfather’s) medicine cabinet? A three-in-one shampoo, conditioner, and body wash? A bag of disposable razors and a can of shaving cream? Aftershave? Brut deodorant, perhaps? As you may already know, the best men’s skincare has come a long way.

    Best Skincare Routine for Men

What are the Best Skin Care Products of 2022?

While there’s no doubt that there are still some die-hard gentlemen who believe grooming and men’s skincare products are one and the same, the past two decades have changed the way men are thinking about the health and appearance of their skin — and it’s only going to grow from here on up. The best men’s skincare of today is made up of results-driven formulas that make up an effective skincare routine for men.

Not sure what to look for in the best skincare for men? No worries. Here at The Derm Review,we’ve reviewed hundreds of products with a scientific lens to ensure you’re creating a skincare routine for men that’s safe and effective.

    The Science Behind Men’s Skin

The skin is the body’s largest organ, so taking care of it is vital. But is men’s skin so different from women’s that it requires a separate set of products, or are clever marketing and social conditioning at play? The short answer is a little bit of both.

Scientific research suggests men’s skin is between 10 and 20 percent thicker than women’s (though some skincare experts claim it can be up to 25 percent) because it contains more collagen and elastin.

Androgens such as testosterone affect the thickness of the skin and how much sebum the skin’s sebaceous glands produce. Seeing as men produce more testosterone, their skin is thicker and oilier than women’s — though women have their own crosses to bear due to hormonal issues concerning their cycle, pregnancy, and menopause.

While oil and thickness can help from a wrinkle-prevention perspective, it also means that it’s more difficult for a man to absorb the vital ingredients from skincare products than a woman’s skin.

Another great wrinkle-fighting perk is that a man’s skin tends to have more collagen than a woman’s. This doesn’t mean they’re exempt from wrinkles or other signs of aging, which is another reason why a solid men’s skincare routine is vital.

    Skincare Routine For Men

We’re going to get into more detail about what men are looking for in a skincare routine next, but let’s just say it’s all about simplicity. While that might mean just a cleanser and a moisturizer for some men, adding in a few extra vital steps can significantly impact the health and appearance of the skin. The following routine takes just less than five minutes.

    Man examining face

    Cleanse

Cleansing is an integral step in any skincare routine, regardless of gender. Also, considering men’s skin is naturally oilier than women’s, cleansing removes dirt, pollutants, and excess oil that has settled inside your pores and the surface layer of the skin.

Cleanse twice a day (morning and night) and after exercise — if you work out in the a.m., your first can come after your sweat sesh. Work the product into the skin in circular motions for 30 seconds to a minute.

Best Cleanser for Men: Carrot & Stick The Gentle Hydrating Cleanser

    Tone

Toners have come a long way from the skin-stripping solutions of yesteryear. Today you can find formulas that hydrate, mattify, control blemishes, etc., so choose one based on your skin type and needs. Simply swipe a cotton ball or round saturated with toner across your face after cleansing.

Note that if you washed your face in the afternoon and exercise later in the day, you could use a toner instead of a cleanser so you’re not over-cleansing, which can strip the skin of its natural oils.

    Best Toner: SkinCeuticals Phyto Corrective

    Target

Using a serum may be a step you’re inclined to skip (or one you’ve never even thought about), but we recommend you reconsider. Serums are highly concentrated, and they can penetrate the skin at a deeper level to target skincare concerns that you are experiencing — from wrinkles and sun damage to oil and acne and everything else in between.

A serum should be applied day and night — you only need a pea-sized amount. Wait approximately one minute for the product to fully absorb before moving on to the next moisturizing step.

An eye cream, gel, serum, is another product you may skip out on to save time (it only takes a few seconds!), but since the skin around the orbital area is thinner and more fragile than the rest of the body, it needs a little extra TLC.

There are formulas to address common concerns such as puffiness, dark circles, dryness, and eye wrinkles. You only need a pea-sized amount for both eyes, like your serum. Apply gently — use your ring finger because it has the lightest touch.

Best Serum for Day: Carrot & Stick The Defense Serum

Best Serum for Night: Carrot & Stick The Repair Serum

    Hydrate

A moisturizer delivers vitamins and nutrients to the skin while creating a barrier to protect your skin from complexion-compromising environmental aggressors like pollution.

Apply a moisturizer in the morning to replenish moisture lost during sleep and before bed to maximize the potency of the skin-strengthening nutrients while your body’s cells regenerate.

Best Moisturizer for Dry Skin: Carrot & Stick The Repair Cream

Best Moisturizer for Normal Skin: Carrot & Stick The Moisturizer

Best Moisturizer for Oily skin: Carrot & Stick The Water Cream

    Protect

The sun may feel good on your skin and boost your mood, but it’s crucial to wear an SPF — or a sunscreen moisturizer — daily. It protects from harmful UVA/UVB rays that cause premature aging, maintains an even skin tone, and helps prevent skin cancer.

For the best results (and protection), you should reapply sunscreen every two hours and after swimming or excessive sweating. If you work indoors and are not seated near a window, you may not need to reapply as frequently. Obviously, this is step can be skipped at night.

Best SPF: Carrot & Stick Carrot & Stick The Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50

    Renew

In most cases, exfoliating isn’t a daily step — but it is an important one because it helps remove the dead skin cells that are harboring on the surface. It also helps keep pores clean and refined and keeps breakouts at bay.

Depending on your skin type, you can use a face scrub formula or a non-gritty acid-based exfoliator (like an at-home chemical peel) to dissolve dead skin cells versus sweeping them away. Twice a week should do the trick, but some exfoliators are formulated to be gentle enough for daily uses. Be mindful of reading the instructions on the package.

Best Exfoliant: Carrot & Stick The Brightening Pads

The Best Skincare Routine for Men: What They Want

Regardless of the difference in men’s skin, for the most part, the concerns between genders are relatively the same and therefore can be treated similarly with skincare products for men.

Even so, while there’s nothing wrong with a man borrowing his significant other’s eye cream or face moisturizer, research shows that guys do have some specific requirements for a skincare routine for men, such as:

    • Products that are easy to use and do the job without a lot of hassle.
    • Products that disappear into the skin without any residue.
    • Their own products, and not those used by women.
    • They generally do not want strong scents — or any at all.

    Men’s Skincare Products: The Statistics

According to a report by Grand View Research, the global men’s skincare products market is poised to reach 18.92 billion (USD) by 2027. That’s an estimated 6.2% CAGR increase from 2020 to 2027. One of the driving factors behind this upturn is the growing demand for skincare for men in the premium category, including organic and natural formulations.

While male consumers worldwide are dipping their toes in the luxury skincare pond, baby boomers make up a big piece of the pie, as they are looking for targeted solutions that go beyond shave care and fragrance. Though cleansers, face washes, and sunscreen have been on the upswing, in recent years, face masks and serums have been more in demand as well — and with some of the best men’s skincare brands.

    Best Men’s Skincare Brands

Skincare Routine for Men: The Bottom Line

Men’s skin is between 10 and 20 percent thicker than women’s (though some skincare experts claim it can be up to 25 percent) because it contains more collagen and elastin.

Androgens such as testosterone affect the thickness of the skin and how much sebum the skin’s sebaceous glands produce. As men have more testosterone, their skin is thicker and oilier than women’s.

Even so, a basic skincare routine for men should follow the same guidelines regardless of gender, meaning choosing products based on skin type, condition, and concern, versus packaging and branding.

Still, research suggests males are still seeking skincare products for men not used by women. They should be easy to use and get the job done without a hassle. Products that absorb quickly and don’t have a strong scent are also desirable.

What’s the Best Skincare brand for men?
Overall, we suggest Carrot & Stick.

    FAQs

Healthy skin is well-nourished skin regardless of gender. Not to mention, the best men’s skincare of today is formulated to effectively reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, acne, oiliness, discoloration, ingrown hairs, razor burn, and more. The bottom line is that men need to take care of their facial skin if they want it to be healthy and look its best — regardless of age.

Yes — besides having facial hair, there are structural differences between men’s and women’s skin. Androgen (testosterone) stimulation causes an increase in skin thickness, which accounts for why a man’s skin is approximately 20- 25% thicker than a woman’s. A man’s skin texture is also tougher.

If you’re a man and you’re feeling greasy in your t-zone or even all over, you’re not alone.
While oil production slows with age, many men deal with oily skin because men produce more testosterone, and their skin is thicker and oilier than a woman’s. However, contrary, face oil is a good thing. We need sebum to help nourish and moisturize both skin and hair.

A skincare routine is not gender-inclusive. It’s all about skin type, condition, and concern. If you’re unsure what products or treatments you need, don’t hesitate to speak to a skincare professional such as a dermatologist or licensed esthetician.

Just because men have more active sebaceous glands doesn’t mean they can escape the aging process. As with other skin types and genders, UV light exposure causes free radicals that damage collagen, elastin, and skin cells. This leads to premature aging, which appears as wrinkling, dark spots, dryness, and loss of tone. Even short amounts of sun exposure daily add up over a lifetime.

While we stand by a well-formulated men’s skincare product (or any product for the skin for that matter), in addition to moisturizing the skin, aloe vera gel can ease or soothe conditions such as sunburn, frostbite, or an allergic reaction.

6 Winter Makeup Tips To Keep To Glowing This Season – Glowalley – Beauty Tips | Skincare Tips

With the arrival of winter, many of us may spot changes in our skin. Winters can cause numerous skin problems like dry, cracked, itchy, and flaky skin resulting in dull complexion and redness. As cold winter approaches, blood circulation reduces, and capillaries get enlarged, causing severe skin problems. The constant dry skin makes us rethink our daily makeup routine. Some winter makeup tips are needed to be included to make our best appearance during this weather,

You must stick to a regular skincare regime during this season to prevent the skin from any kind of damage and infection and stay beautiful and evergreen even during the harsh winters.

It’s the dream of every woman to have soft, smooth, and glowy skin that feels good to the touch and to make it feel hydrated and nourished. You must switch your skincare to a good moisturiser and serum. Moisturiser will promote nourishment and good blood circulation resulting in fresh and healthy glowing skin.  You can also boost your skin health with homemade winter skincare tips: Homemade packs for dry skin in winters

    Winter Makeup Tips

Also, cold and bleak temperatures cause skin conditions like eczema, xerosis, etc. Therefore, knowing the proper techniques for applying and doing makeup this winter season is indispensable to make it look refreshed and radiant.

Six such winter makeup tips are listed below to make you keep glowing this season:

    Apply an oil-based moisturizer

A thick, nourishing moisturizer is always good for your skin health, especially during cold winters when the skin becomes dehydrated. Before starting with makeup, a good hydrating moisturizer massage all over your face and neck can help you achieve a glowing complexion. You can also apply sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays. Make sure to moisturize the face when it’s damp after showering because it’s the actual time to give the washed skin much-needed care.

    Use the suitable primer

Choosing the suitable primer can be difficult, but always go for the luminous primer instead of the matte one because it can help boost the skin glow. Applying the primer will add another layer of hydration to your epidermis. Also, a suitable primer can help you achieve an even finish of makeup and enhance the shine. Primer enhances makeup coverage, hydrates the skin, creates a smoothing effect, and helps keep the makeup for a long time.

Switch to a dewy finish foundation

Flaky skin can lead to a patchy and uneven makeup finish. The makeup might result in getting a bit cakey. But applying a dewy and creamy finish foundation can act as a good base that will glide smoothly all over the face and help retain moisture for long hours. If you do not like the dewy finish, you may try applying some over-it powder to lessen the dewy finish but avoid using dry and matte-based foundations if you have dry skin.

    Opt for creamy formula lipsticks

In winter, creamy lipsticks fit better on flaky lips, nourishing them from the depth and smoothening down the dry lip. It will give you a balmy finish and make the lips look plumper. Glossy and creamy textured lipsticks are loaded with argan oil, which helps keep the lip moisturized. Moreover, the creamy texture will blend smoothly, making it look instantly lively and youthful.

    Add liquid highlighter

For getting a dazzling natural effect on your skin, you can apply a liquid highlighter with the help of a beauty blender on your collar bones, cheekbones, temple areas, under the brows, above the cupid’s bow, down the bridge of your nose, inner corner of your eyes. You can also mix the highlighter with your foundations or CC creams to create a natural-looking, dewy base. They are easy to use, non-sticky, transfer-proof, and dry quickly. It will compliment your whole look and contour your countenance.

     Avoid directly applying powders

One of the most important winter makeup tips is to stay away from loose powder. Directly using talcum powder on your dry and patchy skin in winter can make it look more flaky, dull, and lifeless. It might make the skin more dehydrated because it reduces the production of natural oils from the skin, and it can accentuate wrinkles and frown lines and give rise to unnatural skin. Instead, you can use a little bit of compact powder on your T-zones to set your makeup in place.

It’s essential to change the makeup routine accordingly with the seasons to ensure a smoother base and a flawless finish. Incorporating these winter makeup tips into your regular makeup routine can help you look better with a glowy and dewy makeup finish. These hacks and tips could help you achieve a perfect touch of glam to your everyday daily look with no extra effort.

These tips will be valuable for you in the long run. Moisturizing your skin before the makeup will add suppleness to your dry skin and benefit you. But before directly using any of the primer, moisturizer, or serum on your face, make sure to do a patch test since it might be harmful to your skin if you are allergic to any of the products and ingredients.

Fall Faves: Vegan Skincare, Art, and Wellness Supplements – Vegan Beauty Review | Vegan and Cruelty-Free Beauty, Fashion, Food, and Lifestyle : Vegan Beauty

I know y’all like my fun product recs, so I figured I’d highlight a few new favorites things of mine that have got me all “like whoa.” Let’s take a peeksie weeksie, shall we?

First up is adorable wall art from Mr&Mrs Paw (prices vary) – These make great gifts for dog lovers. You basically upload a photo of your fur baby (dog or cat) and choose a themed costume – anything from a Jedi Master to Mona Lisa and countless others. It’s so much fun and is a wonderful way to pay homage to your furry children.

    mrmrspaw

Next up is Derma e’s Blue Light Shield Spray, $16.95 – Screen time = blue light and blue light has been shown to negatively affect your eyes, sleep, and even your skin (i.e. can contribute to wrinkles!). This cute lil mineral-rich bottle of green spritziness is enriched with lutein, blue green algae, activated charcoal, and ginseng root extract – all intended to hydrate, protect, and detoxify the skin. All that aside, it has a lovely refreshing earthy scent and I enjoying spraying it all over my face throughout the day for a sweet little pick-me-up.

derma e blue light shield spray

And then we have Mychelle Dermaceuticals Renew Remarkable Retinal Serum, $48 – Ever since my 30s, I’ve been obsessed with retinal in my anti-aging skincare regimen. This bad boy not only contains this most potent form of Vitamin a, but it’s also made with Ceramide 3 and orange plant stem cells to promote healthy skin renewal, diminish dark spots and blemishes, and minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The ingredients are clean, to boot! I only use this at night though because it leaves a bit of a yellow tinge on the skin. I also like to let magical serums really get to work while I’m catching my Zzzz’s. Retinal can make your skin more sensitive to the sun, so don’t forget your SFP, even the day after!

Another fave is Love Indus Freedom of Expressions Dual Purpose Line Limiter, $88 – Ok, this is some game changing ish. At first, I was skeptical because it’s very rare for a skincare product to make a noticeable difference, especially after one application. This one did, tho. I’m still processing, haha. First of all, it has a smooth, rounded, metal applicator that gives a cooling and massage-y sensation. Key ingredients include hibiscus, kokum, and vegan collagen, and it has a shimmery orange tint that seamlessly blends into the skin. Wearing makeup over this is a dream! Typically, my powder and foundation tend to settle into my under eye creases, even with the use of makeup primer—but this product has been the best for plumping that delicate area of skin and filling into those lil’ lines. I will definitely be buying this again in the future, hands down.

Since the onset of covid times, I’ve been upping my immunity supplements like a mad woman. I have especially been digging Self+ Supplements Immunity + Unwind blend, $39.99 – I love this especially because it’s got all the immunity boosters PLUS sleepytime helpers. All. The. Good. Stuff: vitamin C, vitamin D, magnesium, zinc, L-Tryptophan, elderberry extract, ashwagandha, L-Theanine, reishi mushroom, and melatonin. There’s no added sugar, it tastes delicious (berry-type flavor), and it sends me off to the most delicious sleep around 30-40 minutes after taking it. So good.

Eight Ways To Upgrade Your Skincare Routine

Eight Ways To Upgrade Your Skincare Routine, Barbies Beauty Bits

New Year, New You; eight ways to upgrade your skincare routine by Barbie’s Beauty Bits.

You can continually improve your skincare routine no matter how healthy your skin is. While beauty trends come and go, some skincare advice stands the test of time, and it can truly transform how your skin looks and feels.

There are several ways to step up your skincare game, from double-cleansing and shaving your face to using led light therapy and adding antioxidants to your routine. We are sharing our 8 top ways to improve your skincare game, so continue reading.

How To Improve Your Skincare Routine: 8 Top Tips

Look At The Ingredients In Your Skincare
Many people are aware of clean makeup and will read up on reviews like Clean Beauty mascara review. But what many need to realize is that the same approach to skincare is a healthy one.

For some skincare obsessives, a product isn’t working unless it’s tingling or burning, which is not how it works. You want to avoid irritation, especially if you have sensitive skin.

Products that irritate are unsafe for the skin and usually contain toxic ingredients like sulfates, which are essentially detergents.

Parabens are another ingredient to avoid. Parabens are a synthetic preservative. They don’t just cause health problems but also contribute to premature skin aging since they increase sensitivity to the sun.

On the same token, all-natural skincare doesn’t always work. The key is a balance of the right antioxidants, which brings us to our next tip.

    why-you-need-antioxidants-in-skincare-barbies-beauty-bits

Add Antioxidants To Your Skincare Routine
In a nutshell, antioxidants protect the body against the harmful effects of oxidative stress caused by environmental factors like UV rays, makeup, unhealthy diets, and pollution.

Oxidative stress on the skin can lead to damage. Causing a breakdown in collagen, which leads to fine lines, wrinkles, sagging skin, and dark spots, which result in premature aging.

In skincare, antioxidants are critical because they help limit free radical production and neutralize them when they enter the skin. As a result, they play a vital role in skincare.

Vitamin C, E, and retinol are examples of antioxidants.

Use Skincare Products With Vitamin C In Them

Vitamin C, also known as L-Ascorbic Acid, is a highly effective antioxidant that protects against free radicals by neutralizing them. Vitamin C is one of the most effective antioxidants and a critical ingredient that aids anti-aging.

Vitamin C is a game-changer in getting brighter, younger-looking skin. This water-soluble antioxidant is a natural component of healthy skin. The younger we are, the more vitamin C we have on our skin. But as we get older, we lose these nutrients over time.

Luckily, skincare products, like a vitamin c serum, can help lessen this damage, so the skin looks healthier and radiant. Vitamin C is an ingredient that should be part of everyone’s skincare routine—regardless of age or skin type.

It’s known and loved for its brightening and anti-aging abilities. Dermatologists also tout it as one of the most potent protective antioxidants to help reduce skin inflammation and irregular pigmentation while promoting healthy collagen production.

    reduce-the-signs-of-aging-with-gua-sha-barbies-beauty-bits

Reduce The Signs Of Aging With A Facial Massage
Fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots are a part of aging. But with a facial massage, you can lighten your appearance and keep your skin youthful.

My favorite facial massage is a guasha facial! It is a highly effective technique to lift, shape, and contour the face. When performed regularly and correctly, this skincare technique will improve circulation, tissue health, and facial muscle strength, reduce puffiness, lessen the appearance of fine lines, and soften skin.

This will leave your skin looking more youthful, toned, and glowing naturally.

    Double Cleanse Your Skin
We tend to follow the “wash and repeat” method when washing our hair. But what about a lather-rinse-repeat of skincare?

The anti-aging step that you should never skip is washing the face. And a double cleanse is a way to step up your face-cleansing game!

A double cleanse involves washing your face in two steps: an oil-based cleanser followed by a cleanser.

    adding-red-light-therapy-to-your-skincare-routine-barbies-beauty-bits

Introduce Red Light Therapy Into Your Skincare Routine
Let there be light; for your skin that is, with Led Light Therapy. According to WebMD, light therapy “uses skin-safe, low-level light in different wavelengths and colors.” These rays penetrate the skin barrier to provide a range of skin benefits, from better skin tone, and even texture, to added firmness and more tightness.

At-home versions are gentler on the skin because the bulbs are not as intense. That’s good because it enables you to use these devices for anti-aging and skin healing without going to a spa. One of my favorite places for these devices is the Currentbody, which has the best at-home led-therapy masks.

Vow To Shave Your Face For Younger Looking Skin
The desquamation process slows down as we age, meaning that our bodies produce and shed old skin cells more slowly.

Shaving your face is one of the most effective techniques for exfoliating the skin and speeding up cell turnover. And no it does not make you grow facial hair, that is an urban myth.

    Shaving Your Face Helps To:

    • Rid dead skin cells
    • Improve your skin tone and texture
    • Promote cellular turnover
    • Diminish fine lines and wrinkles
    • Minimizes the appearance of age spots and other sun damage
    • Gently exfoliates to even out skin tone and texture
    • Unclog and reduce the appearance of pore size
    • Stimulate blood flow to help improve the skin’s elasticity
    • Can apply makeup flawlessly
    • Offer better penetration of your skincare products, like your SPF 30 or glycolic acids

    Mask Mapping: Multi-Masking
One size does not fit all, which also comes to skincare. Everyone’s skin features its very own personality, with specific needs, individual concerns, and personal likes and dislikes. Enter Mask Mapping…

Instead of applying the same mask to your entire face, there is a better approach called mask mapping. This technique allows you to use multiple face masks for different areas of your face for a customized treatment that checks all your anti-aging needs!

In this case, a facial mask is a vital addition to any skincare routine. There are countless options no matter if you suffer from irritated skin, pimples, blackheads, or anything else, you can find the best mix for you.

So there you have it beauties eight ways to upgrade your skincare routine, so you will be glowing in 2023!

How to Find the Best Skincare Products

Finding the right product for your skin takes some time, effort, and a little experimentation. The first thing to do is to understand your skin.

Most skin is normal, dry, oily, or a combination. If you’re not sure, pay attention to how your skin feels after cleansing, and whether it looks shiny in a few hours.

Next, are there any skin issues to be addressed such as acne, hyperpigmentation, or textured skin such as large pores? Anti-aging can also be a major concern when fine lines and crow’s feet start to appear.

Once you understand your skin type and what you want to improve on your complexion, it’s easier to narrow down the pool of products to try.

How Many Skincare Products Do I Need?

Apologies to all the minimalists but it’s important to remember that one product cannot do everything for you. However, depending on your skin’s needs you can maintain a pretty minimal routine such as a cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen.

Our in-house biochemist and skincare specialist, Elle MacLeman, tends to recommend using a cleanser, moisturizer, serum, oil and sunscreen.

Some people also enjoy a little more ritual to their routine and enjoy more products and steps. As long as it’s working for you and you enjoy it, then it is the right number of products.

What Do the Best Skincare Products Have in Common?

Our best skincare products of 2022 are a diverse group of items- we’ve sourced them from department stores, beauty boutiques, drugstores, and everything in between.

What some of these products have in common is a handful of hero ingredients, including hyaluronic acid (the ultimate of hydrators), peptides (which can help boost collagen production), squalane (a lipid that is highly moisturizing), and a variety of botanical extracts like licorice root and turmeric, both skin brighteners.

Best Skin Care Brand of 2022

Which is the best skincare brand on the market? Overall, we suggest Carrot & Stick.

Carrot & Stick takes a tough-love approach to skincare, perfectly balancing the gentle nurturing of plants with the powerful results of innovative science. The result? Straightforward, effective skincare that delivers radiant-looking skin that is good for you and good for the environment.

Oh it’s been a while between peri and menopausal friendly skincare updates but I’ve got a good one for you: a Trinny London skincare routine that my skin is not only loving but thriving on. And I was prescribed the routine by Trinny herself. Yes, I still can’t quite believe that bit!

Before I get stuck in and share what the routine involves and what it was like to share a bathroom with this incredible powerhouse of a woman (yes, I got to not only meet Trinny but she touched my face. A LOT.), I’ll repeat what I’ve always been upfront about when it comes to my skin and the products I use.

    1. One of the biggest myths about skin is that injectables change the texture and feel of it. They don’t. I’ve never hidden the fact that I get Botox. I’ve done so (two-three times a year) since the year I turned 40. And the year I turned 50, I got .5ml of filler in each of my cheeks. I haven’t had filler for two years now. I’m now 55. I know it’s not for everyone and that’s ok.

    2. The condition of my skin is thanks to a combination of wearing sunscreen and staying out of the sun from a very young age and having a consistent skincare routine since the age of 18. I upped that routine the year I turned 30 and actually committed to night-time cleansing. I KNOW! Future self is very happy.

    3. I invest in seeing a trusted skincare therapist every month for a facial treatment to suit exactly what my skins needs at that given moment. Usually it involves microdermabrasion, a mask and LED light therapy. It’s important to find someone who has the knowledge to treat your skin specifically to your individual needs, not just in a cookie-cutter, “how much product can I sell?” approach.

    4. I’m not currently sponsored by any skincare company.

The biggest challenge I’ve faced with my skin during the peri and now menopause years is that as I’ve aged it’s become highly irritable and sensitive … a bit like myself. HAH.

For years and years, I’d test and write about all manner of beauty products. I could throw anything at my face and it wouldn’t have any adverse affects at all. Not any more.

If you’re feeling the same changes in your skin, particularly if you feel you’re in peri menopause, my biggest skincare tip is to tread gently. Potent actives, such as retinol and Vitamin C can trigger the opposite of what you’re trying to achieve with your skin. Everyone is, however, different. This is just my message to you because skincare – and serums specifically – are such a hot topics right now that the temptation can be just to jump right in and throw caution to the wind. It took me a long time to build my skin strength back up and I’d not want the same to happen to you.

Ok … back to the topic at hand: a Trinny London peri and menopausal friendly skincare routine.

When Trinny launched skincare earlier this year, I jumped on board and bought the two cleansers. It was love at first face wash but I was scared for my face to buy any more of the products as the serums and moisturisers launched. Trinny London’s Australian PR company had also sent me some to trial but still I was hesitant.

Fast forward a few months later, I’m having a career pinch-me moment. I’m standing with THE Trinny Woodall in the bathroom of her suite at Sydney’s Park Hyatt hotel. I’d barely glanced at the 180 degree view that took in Circular Quay and the Opera House before Trinny had her fingers on my face, taking me through a Trinny London peri and menopausal friendly skincare routine and teaching me how to massage my face and stand on one leg as I applied it.

Sit back, relax and watch the video for more. I had more than a few laughs as I watched back and edited it. There was absolutely no chance to feel nervous. Trinny made me feel welcome and was engaged from the moment we met. She is every bit the woman that you seen on your Instagram or Facebook feed.

Trinny London peri and menopausal friendly skincare routine – products used

I’ve now been using this exact routine every night since meeting Trinny. I can hand on heart say (also verified by my skin therapist this week) that this routine has made a visible difference to the texture of my skin.

    1. Be Your Best enzyme balm cleanser (the first step in an end-of-the-day double cleanse – I wouldn’t use in the morning)

    2. Better Off AHA/PHA gel cleanser (second cleansing step at night; only cleansing step in the morning)

    3. Tiptoe In – PHA exfoliant (one pump) diluted with Plump Up peptide + HA serum (two pumps)

    4. Plump Up peptide + HA serum (two pumps) … a second layer on top of previous one.

    5. Bounce Back intense peptide moisturiser

This routine will work for the morning too – with sunscreen as your final step. I’m still using up my existing products so will re-assess that routine when they run out.

These products were gifted but I’ll continue to buy them after they run out. My skin loves them. The glow factor is definitely there and I can’t get enough of that.

Unsure where you should start? Like the makeup survey, there’s a Match2Me survey for Trinny London skincare. And if you live or are visiting Sydney or Melbourne, you can book an appointment at the Trinny London kiosk at Westfield Bondi Junction and Westfield Doncaster respectively. Virtual appointments via Zoom are also available.

Speaking of makeup … stay tuned. Part 2 of my Trinny Woodall meet and experience is coming. I may have been going a little rogue with my base colours the past four years but I stand corrected!

Erborian Korean Skincare – Let’s talk beauty

#Gifted It has been so nice to try a selection of Erborian’s best selling/hero products, a great introduction to a brand I have heard so many wonderful things about. Let’s start with the 3 skincare products, Red Pepper Paste Mask, Ginseng Super Serum and the Ginseng Infusion Total Eye Care, all three are focused on reviving tired, lacklustre skin. Exactly what I look for in skincare, I have quite dull, dehydrated skin and being in in my mid-forties I need smoothing, invigorating and energising products.

Erborian skincare combines the effectiveness of traditional medicinal herbs with sophisticated Korean technology. What is also pretty cool about this brand is that they create hybrid products that combine skincare and make-up, like their iconic BB Cream and award-winning CC Cream. I do enjoy make-up products that also give effective skincare benefits too, the Korean’s seem to be damn good at this!

    Erborian Korean Skincare

This mask is all about radiance and energising! It’s a powerhouse of skin loving ingredients, and because of this it quickly transforms tired skin,

    • Red pepper extract – Known for its energizing and antioxidant properties, it boosts the natural radiance of the skin.
    • Exfoliating enzymes – (fermentation): They smooth and improve the texture of the skin.
    • Niacinamide – Known for its illuminating properties. It helps to maintain skin’s hydration.
    • Licorice root extract – Known for its illuminating and antioxidant properties.

This mask has quite a thick consistency, and the red pepper means it is bright red. The mask is a paste, and it applies easily, and smoothly it feels cool and soothing on the skin. After 10 – 15 mins, wash it off to reveal a refreshed, velvety smooth complexion. It is quite astonishing how instantly it transforms your skin. A great addition to your Autumn/Winter skincare routine, to keep your skin looking healthy and radiant during the colder months, it is a great product to help protect skin from external stress that can accelerate signs of ageing.

So all in all, this Red Pepper Paste Mask is good skin health in a bottle! It gets 10/10 from me!

    Erborian Red Pepper Mask

    Erborian Ginseng Eye Cream

Fantastic at reviving tired, dark under eyes, gives the skin a soft focus finish whist hydrating and invigorating. This rich, lightweight eye cream wears so well under make-up, concealer glides on and stays put, looking smooth and fresh. It’s not hard to see why this is not only one of Erborian’s best selling products, but also an award winning product and a beauty industry favourite too (oh & a firm favourite of mine).

The name is to be believed, it is a total eye cream, it’s anti-ageing, reduces the appearance of dark circles, fine lines and fatigue whilst nourishing and protecting the delicate skin around the eye area!  This is a morning skincare must have, even if you don’t feel awake, your eyes will look fresh and bright.

    • White Ginseng Complex – known for it’s anti-ageing benefits, is full of antioxidants that help soothe, smooth and protect the skin.
    • Corn oil – Ginseng Infusion moisturiser helps strengthen skin’s barrier function whilst Sesame oil and Shea Butter which help nourish and soften the skin.
    • Flecks of Vitamin E – help fight against the signs of ageing and protect the skin against environmental aggressors

‘Composed of white ginseng root, licorice, wild yam, horsetail plant and Kigelia fruit extracts, this unique complex is known for its protecting, smoothing and moisturising effect on skin’.

    Korean Skin Therapy

Right away after applying this serum you will notice how smooth your skin looks, it is that effective. Lightweight and smoothing, this serum is pretty incredible, I am quickly learning that the Ginseng products from Erborian are up there with the best skincare I have tried, especially for my age group.

Great for morning and evening, this serum will keep your skin looking naturally radiant, serum is one of my favourite skincare steps. I love the added hydration this serum gives my skin, how plump and healthy it looks after applying it.

80% Ginseng extracts, 90% natural origin ingredients

White Ginseng Extract – prevents the appearance of the signs of ageing and helps to smooth wrinkles.
Fermented Red Ginseng – helps to preserve the youth of the skin.
Ginseng Aqueous Extracts – obtained through a process of steam maceration of Ginseng, they contain minerals necessary for the balance and the hydration of the skin.
Hyaluronic Acid – plumps up the surface of the skin
Peptides – maintains collagen levels for a firming and smoothing effect
Complex of Tara fruit and Red Algae extracts – smooths and reduces wrinkles

    Erborian BB Creams

Now on to the make-up products. I’ve testing out 3 of Erborian’s make-up/skincare hybrid products, make-up with the benefits of skincare. I’m sure most of you have heard of, it not used at least one of Erborian’s iconic, BB or CC creams, they’ve won countless awards, and really put Korea at the centre of the beauty industry.

‘With a lighter texture than foundation, not only does it provide full coverage with a flawless matte finish, but it also moisturises the skin all day long and protects it against sun damage. Part skincare, part make-up, this hybrid product is the ideal alternative to foundation’s instant results, with long-term results on top. Erborian BB Cream is one of the best guarantees for year-round beautiful skin!’

This is a 5 in one BB Crème (beauty balm), with buildable coverage, it evens out your skin tone and minimises imperfections giving you a healthy, radiant flawless base. This formula is lightweight, hydrating, nourishing and looks very natural. It is a real powerhouse of skin loving ingredients, including a highly concentrated selection of herbs used traditionally in Korean skincare, to promote skin healing.

Portulaca Oleracea Extract, Liquorice Root Extract and Kigelia Africana Fruit Extract: these help to reduce blemishes and make the skin more radiant.
Licorice & Ginger: Act as anti-inflammatories, helping to protect the skin against free radicals
Titanium dioxide: Sun protection SPF 20

I’d say it is a great everyday product, fantastic to help your skin look fresh and radiant with a light (buildable) coverage of make-up. If you feel more confident wearing make-up but do not always want to apply heavy foundations, then a BB cream would be a great option. I wear the shade NUDE, which is the middle swatch below.

    Erborian CC Cream

This is the newest addition to Erborian’s make-up products. Think BB Crème but with the ability to cover more imperfections which gives your skin a more flawless, but natural finish. This is the third swatch in the photo above, a slightly lighter shade than the BB Crème but still a good match to my skin tone. If you have redness, dark spots or uneven skin tone, the Super BB Crème is a must-have for your make-up bag. It is still very lightweight but offers a higher coverage, with the added benefit of amazing skincare ingredients too. This also provides SPF20.

Super BB – combines two Korean super-ingredients: White Ginseng and fermented Ginseng flower, in a formula that instantly reveals a smoother and moisturised skin. In order to visibly reduce imperfections (pimples, pores, blackheads, etc.), this BB cream for acne prone skin has been enriched with Niacinamide, a powerful active ingredient for clearer skin.

    Erborian Hybrid Makeup Skincare

This is a game changer and works like magic. It comes out of the tube almost like a moisturiser, in that it is white, so the magic is that colour controlling pigments self-adjust to your natural luminous beauty. The intelligent, hybrid formula transforms your skin, to give a velvety, ultra-soft spotless finish, I have the shade Clair which is a light beige, very natural and flawless finish. You can wear this as your base, for a luminous, radiant finish, or underneath a BB Créme or foundation for extra coverage and glow.  lightweight. It is easy to see why this product is an industry favourite, it is so easy to use and it is so effective! This also provides SPF25.

‘At first glance cream appears white, but upon application, it adapts precisely to match your skin tone, naturally revealing a more even complexion, leaving skin luminous and soft, while reducing the appearance of blemishes.’

Centella Asiatica: Helps increase collagen production and antioxidant activity. Anti-ageing active ingredient.
Adenosine: An anti-ageing active ingredient. Improves skin elasticity and softness.
Vitamin B3: Protects from free radicals. Strengthens skin barrier and reduces skin unevenness.
Tiger Grass – Anti-inflammatory benefits and helps with healing
Honey Extract – Softens and firms the skin
Vitamin E – Has anti-free radical properties and helps protect the skin from the sun’s harmful rays.

    Erborian Skincare Products

Trying a selection of their hero products has given me such a lovely introduction to Erborian, who are a brand that I’ve heard so many positive reviews of, and I am now on that band wagon. I am here to say, they’re all true, and they have not only lived up to all the hype, but quite possible surpassed it.

I am converted, addicted, in love with this brand (not an exaggeration). Every single one of the products they sent me to try out, are now in my everyday routine. I am very much looking forward to trying more from them, especially the Ginseng Collection – which targets fine lines and wrinkles.

Let me know what Erborian products you have tried, what you’d recommend or if, like me, you are new to this brand what would you like to try out.

  • Pregnancy Skincare Routine: 1st Trimester

    Pregnancy Skincare Routine: 1st Trimester

Sydne Style shares her pregnacy skincare routine with the best beauty products to use while pregnant

A few days after I found out that I was pregnant, I went through every beauty product I own. Being a fashion and beauty influencer, I’m constantly trying out new products. So let’s just say the process took quite some time! After tons of research, I found what is now my holy grail to quickly learning if a beauty product is safe for pregnancy: 15 Minute Beauty’s Brand List. It’s such a great resource because you simply click into the beauty brand and then there is a list of all products carried by that brand divided between Pregnancy and Nursing Safe Products, Not Safe for Pregnancy, Ok for Nursing and Not Safe for Pregnancy or Nursing. I used this list to create my own pregnancy safe skincare routine during my first trimester.

I gave away all products that were not safe for pregnancy or nursing (my close friends were very happy to benefit from this one!). I boxed up products that were ok for nursing since I’ll use those within the year. And I only kept out pregnancy safe beauty products. It was hard to see my beauty cabinet clear out. But I was pleasantly surprised to find that I could still use some of my skincare faves. It’s also been great trying new brands and products. I’ve quickly developed more beauty favorites that I plan to continue post pregnancy!

Here is a list of all the skincare products I used during my first trimester:

    Face wash

On days I wear makeup, or feel like my skin is clogged up, I wash my face with Tatcha The Deep Cleanse Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser ($39). It’s a mild exfoliant and that does an amazing job cleaning my skin without drying it out.

Korres Greek Yoghurt Foaming Cream Cleanser ($16) is a great mild cleanser. It goes on super creamy, has a very faint smell and leaves my face feeling totally refreshed. I’ve been using it daily morning and night.

On days I’m wearing makeup or feel I need extra exfoliation, I wash my face at night using Foreo Luna Mini 2 ($139). It gets rid of everything, leaving my face super clean. The design makes getting those hard to reach place like around the nose, easy to clean.

    Serums and Toners

I used to use SkinCeuticals’ Phloretin CF daily. But after becoming pregnant, my normally oily skin became drier. So I swapped to SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic ($169) as my daily serum. The vitamin C majorly helps with the dark spots that have become even more prevalent during pregnancy.

I was thrilled to learn that my favorite SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Gel ($86) is safe to use during pregnancy. I like to seal my vitamin C with this gel, which binds moisture to the skin. It has a high concentration of hyaluronic acid, which really helps hydrate the skin.

At night I’ve been using Caudalie Premier Cru Anti-Aging Face Serum ($169) to help with hydration. Pregnancy has made my skin super dehydrated and I find the high levels of hyaluronic acid in this serum to majorly help.

Thayers has been my go-to for years when it comes to toners. Recently I’ve been using Thayers Alcohol-Free Witch Hazel Facial Toner ($10.95) in Rose Petal. They have all different variations. But as most of you know, rose scents have always been my favorite.

    Moisturizers & SPF

My brown spots have been so much more prevalent during my pregnancy. So I’m adding additional vitamin C. I like to use Naturopathica Vitamin C Revitalizing Lotion ($68) after my serums in the morning. It has a lightweight scent and feel, and absorbs very quickly.

Caudalie Premier Cru Anti Aging Cream Moisturizer ($129) has high level of hyaluronic acid, which helps provide moisture. Since my skin has been so deydrated during pregnancy, I’ve found this to be very helpful. I also love the eco-friendly design of this product: you can buy pod replacements to insert into the tub rather than purchasing a whole new jar.

On nights I feel like I need extra hydration, I use Algenist Overnight Restorative Cream ($94). It’s super creamy and my skin drinks it right up. In the morning, my face feels baby soft.

Sunscreen is one of the hardest beauty products to find during pregnancy. Mineral ones are the safetest but most left me with a white cast. The exception? Wander Beauty Pack Up & Glow Priming Mineral SPF 40 ($36). I now use it every day before leaving the house.

When I want a tinted sunscreen that is safe for being pregnant, I turn to Bliss Block Star Mineral Daily Sunscreen ($25). It’s a great mineral option that gives just a touch of tint and blends well with my light-medium skin.

    Deodorant & Body

A bunch of friends recommended that I switch to natural deodorant when I was pregnant. I’ve tried so many over the years and honestly I haven’t been happy with any. I’ve been a Dove girl forever. So I simply swapped to Dove 0% Aluminum Stick ($6.29). I went with sensitive skin but they have all different scents. It took a few days to adjust. But it quickly worked just as well as the previous Dove formula I’ve used for years.

I’ve been using stretch mark products religiously morning and night. My favorite has been Bio-Oil Skincare Oil ($23.99). I prefer an oil over a cream becuase I find it to be more hydrating and I can use less, which means the product lasts way longer! It’s for stretch marks and scars. So in addition to my bell and chest, I’ve been using it on scars on my arm as well, since they’ve gotten more noticeable during pregnancy.

Every time I get out the shower, I apply Jergens Ultra Healing Hand and Body Lotion ($7.89). The vitamin C helps with the brown spots I’ve been getting during pregnancy. And the product easily absorbs so I don’t have to rub it in too much.

I keep Algenist Genius Liquid Collagen Hand Cream ($38) on my nightstand. I’ve been using it on my hands and feet to wake up with super moisturized skin.

I hope you enjoyed reading about the skincare products I used during my first trimester! I’ll update you at the end of my second trimester to let you know about new beauty finds. And, as always, I’ll continue to update my Beauty Finds page! There you’ll find product reviews that are searchable by category.

  • How to Gift Skincare This Holiday Season

How to Gift Skincare This Holiday Season

Sure, you can spring for another pair of socks — but nothing brings joy quite like a skincare gift. After all, when a given product changes your skin for the better, it’s only natural to want to share the glow with others. “Skincare is all about sharing knowledge and tips, having fun, and discovering products that really do work for your skin,” says David Kim, MD, a dermatologist at Idriss Dermatology in New York City. “This, of course, is with the understanding that people have different skin types — and not all products work the same on different skin types.”

On that note, there’s the rub: Gifting a skincare product or set can be a little tricker than just picking up a pack of hand creams and calling it a day. There are personal preferences to consider, from fragrance to texture — not to mention their skin type and other conditions in the mix. With that in mind, try these dermatologist-approved tips for choosing the perfect skincare gift.

    Make it feel personal

If they’ve never used a highlighting serum before, make it feel approachable and fun by sharing your own experience. Include a note with your Watermelon Glow Niacinamide Dew Drops that shares why it’s your favorite product, and share tips on how to use it to make it feel personalized.

Or, you can use your intel about their habits to get ideas; for instance, you could write: “I know you’ve got a big presentation coming up and I’m so proud; here’s an eye cream to help keep you looking fresh after a late night of work.” After all, it’s the thought that counts the most, right?

    Keep it gentle

While you might swear by a given exfoliant that your skin loves, the general rule for gifting is the gentler, the better. “I typically gift products that are lightweight, hydrating, and gentle,” says Dr. Kim. “I try to find products that are calming and soothing that I know most people will be able to tolerate and benefit from.” With that in mind, a hydrating moisturizer like Plum Plump Hyaluronic Cream is hard to beat.

    Do some research

Whether you’ve peeped their skincare routine on vacation or saw a bottle of Dew Drops chilling in their bathroom (and know they’ll eventually need a restock), context is your friend. “It helps to know the type of texture, fragrance, and feel the person likes when recommending new products,” Dr. Kim says. Even better if you know your giftee’s skin type, he says, “so you can customize a regimen that is compatible with it.”

    Find out about conditions

If you’re close, you might already know this — but it’s worth asking just in case whether they have any big skincare challenges. “Rosacea and eczema are very prevalent in the U.S. and affect 14 million and 31 million people, respectively,” says Dr. Kim. “Using the wrong products can cause an allergic reaction and break down the skin barrier.” If you’re not sure…

    Stick with ceramides

It’s impossible to go wrong with ceramides — since everyone has them, and everyone needs more. “Ceramide is a great ingredient in restoring the skin barrier and hydrating the skin,” Dr. Kim says. “It’s also very gentle and works essentially on everyone.” They star front-and-center in our Avocado Ceramide Recovery Serum, and in supporting the moisture barrier, can improve all skin.

If you know they’re already on the ceramides bandwagon, though, consider peptides instead. “Peptides are great sources of amino acids to help with fine lines and wrinkles, and collagen production,” he says. Argireline is a buzzy one that they might not have tried; you can find it in the Guava Vitamin C Bright-Eye Gel Cream, where it helps smooth and firm skin.

    Let them decide

Sometimes, the greatest gift of all is a little spending spree. And therein is the magic (and mass appeal) of a gift card, which allows them to pick out their fave products. While it might feel a little less personalized, it’s still a great option if you’re not clued into their skin concerns and preferences.

Ultimately, the goal is to give a gift that they’ll love — and actually use. And with skincare gifts like these, it’s hard to go wrong.

Olivanna London Skincare : An Introduction.

I wanted to chat about a skincare brand that recently got onto my radar and I’ve been really enjoying discovering the brand with a few products I have been sent. In short, Olivanna London Skincare is a luxurious, British, plant-powered and science-backed skincare range.

Janine Summers created Olivanna to empower and inspire women. She is also the founder of My Olivanna, which is a skincare range targeted towards teens and younger ladies. I had a quick look on their website and I love the idea of this range – and the packaging looks really good. Olivanna, the range I am talking about here, has been created for a slightly older audience than the teens : so the formulas are a little more intricate and powerful with a focus on high-performance ingredients and botanicals. Olivanna London skincare is dermatologically and ophthalmology tested and supported by independent clinical trials.

Janine, the founder was an early adopter of organic and natural beauty. Olivanna’s plant-powered formulas look to the seasons and the British countryside for inspiration. Its luxury, clinically proven and sustainable skincare using British-grown ingredients! It’s also formulated and manufactured in the UK. The skincare is packaged in gorgeous artisan glass bottles that have been handcrafted by one of the last remaining family-owned glassmakers in the country.

It’s a skincare brand that seems to exude anything British! So let’s look into some of the products..

Nature is the inspiration. The skin-loving formulas are packed with homegrown botanical actives and natural extracts that soothe, nourish and protect your skin. All formulas are rich in omega seed oil to help maintain a healthy skin barrier. You will also notice a lot of hyaluronic acid and ceramides to help restore your natural glow and target fine lines.

Olivanna London ‘Signature Soothing Complex’ :

Every product from the range contains their Signature Soothing Complex which compromises of rosemary, chamomile and cornflower extracts. This soothing trio of anti-inflammatory actives helps to balance and protect the skin’s delicate microbiome from daily environmental aggressors and pollutants.

    olivanna London skincare review

This silky omega-rich cleanser melts away make-up and impurities with a powerful blend of British-grown seed oils that nourish and protect the skin barrier from environmental aggressors and daily pollutants.

This is the first product I picked up from Olivanna London and honestly – love it! I don’t have a lot of cream cleansers in my arsenal as I more-often-than-not prefer a balm but this is one of my favourite cream cleansers ever. It is super gentle, non-stripping yet removes my makeup well and leaves skin feeling really pampered and comfortable.

It is clinically proven to reduce redness and calm inflammation and it has been scientifically formulated to provide immediate and long-lasting hydration. I have had a really awful skin reaction this last week and this has been my go-to cleanser.

    Key ingredients:

It is enriched with the Olivanna London signature anti-inflammatory soothing complex, comprising of rosemary extract, cornflower and organic chamomile extracts. Rose water and aloe vera work to combat inflammation, refresh and rehydrate, whilst glycerin and squalane restore skin’s balance and helps to reduce moisture loss for skin that looks and feels supple and luminous.

I think this is a beautiful cleanser, and one that I have been reaching for more and more over the cooler months, as my skin came become more reactive, red and just needs a little more comfort and soothing. It is super calming and gentle and I would recommend anyone with any skin type to try this as a cream cleanser go-to. Gorgeous formula!

I’m really interested in trying the Bakuchiol Miracle Night Serum and the Intense Repair Night Cream next. Also do look into My Olivanna for the younger kids and teens.
